Paul Byrnes recently launched “At The End Of The Day” which features stories from retired sports personalities on what it’s like to leave the game they love.
The Oranmore native was an RTÉ producer, interacting daily with personalities from all walks of sports life.
About the Book
The book features a forward from the venerable Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh. The 87-year old is an icon in the world of sports commentary, who tells the tale of life after leaving the games behind and enjoying them solely for passion.
The book features accounts from Sonia O’Sullivan, Derval O’Rouke, Tomás O’Shea, Donal Óg Cusack, Damien Duff and many other stars of Irish Sport who talk about their life after the game, what they do on a daily basis and how being a sportsperson can affect your view of the world.
“Imagine preparing for the biggest game of your life. Imagine the blood, sweat and years that go into such. Imagine the dressing room beforehand. Imagine playing with the best against the best. Imagine the roar of the crowd. Imagine winning. It must be the greatest feeling in the world. But what about when it’s over and you step off the stage? Imagine that. You’re no longer a player. You’re now a former player.
‘At The End Of The Day’ is about retiring from the national or international stage in sport. It’s the story of 14 of Ireland’s greatest ever sportspeople who’ve retired in recent years, including Henry Shefflin, AP McCoy and Kenny Egan. It’s an honest and moving account of their last day – be it on the pitch, on the track or in the ring. We find out what they’re doing now and how they’ve coped with life after sport.”
The book is a fascinating insight into a world of sport we rarely get to see and will keep you hooked with every word.
The books was recently launched on October 3rd in The Bridge Street Bar, Castlebar, Co. Mayo, to great applause. The Connaught Telegraph were on hand to cover the launch and the feedback on the book has been fantastic.
